Ideally, a hardness reference standard should be certified with traceable laboratory equipment that mirrors the test method, load force, and indenter of the hardness tester you wish to calibrate or check. For added confidence, use three certified test blocks, so you can calibrate to your target hardness and verify your instrument's linearity on the harder and softer specimens.
